Portable Freezer

A portable freezer is a powered cooler whose maker says it reaches 0°F or colder, which is the temperature the FDA sets for a freezer. That one number is the whole category. Read the lowest temperature first, then decide between one zone and two, then size it by the wrapped packages you'll carry. Power comes from a 12V socket on the road and a wall outlet at home. (Renee asked why the freezer gets the good spot in the truck. Because the freezer has never once asked to stop at Sheetz.)

What’s in this listPowered coolers that reach 0°F or colder, as stated by the maker or the Amazon listing — cold enough to freeze. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

What makes a portable freezer different from a portable fridge

Every box in the table here is a powered cooler its maker or listing rates to 0°F or colder, cold enough to freeze. That's the rule, and it's a strict one. A box that only gets to 20°F might keep frozen food firm for a while, but it isn't a freezer by the FDA's line, which puts the freezer at 0°F.

In practice, almost everything that passes the rule has a compressor. One maker puts it simply: a compressor unit freezes no matter what the weather outside does, while a thermoelectric one only holds what you put in it, a fixed gap under the outside air. The full lineup of powered coolers, and how the cooling types work, lives over on the electric cooler overview. Here I'm sticking to the freezing part: what to read on the spec sheet, how to carry frozen meat, and what to do at the other end.

You'll see these sold as a 12V freezer, a car freezer or a portable freezer for camping. Same requirement each time: a stated low of 0°F or colder.

Why 0°F is the number to read first

Two extension services and the FDA agree on the line. The FDA says the freezer temperature should be 0°F. Ohio State Extension says to freeze and store venison at 0°F or lower, and that most cuts keep six to nine months there. Penn State Extension says properly wrapped game meat stores 9 to 12 months in the freezer.

So a portable freezer has one job: get to 0°F and stay there, in a truck, in a garage, at a cabin with a sketchy outlet. Everything else on the spec sheet is about how easily it does that job.

What to look at when you pick a portable freezer

The columns come from the makers' specs and, where those are silent, the Amazon listing (marked as listing values): how cold it goes, how it cools, zones, quarts, power in and power protection, solar, outside size and empty weight. For frozen food, I read them in this order.

Lowest temp: the stated number, not the word "freezer"

This column is the reason the page exists. Read the number. Some product names say freezer and the spec says otherwise, and some fridges with no freezer in the name go well below 0°F. One maker's US listings give ranges down to -7°F; another maker's dual-zone units go to -8°F.

Not every fridge has a number on its dial, either. One maker's FAQ says its chest fridge, set to 5 on the dial, gets to approximately -18°C, which is 0°F. If your thermostat has dial positions instead of degrees, a freezer thermometer is the only way to know which number is your 0°F. Jess wrote that tip in my notebook, and added: "A setting without a thermometer is a rumor."

Cooling type: compressor, for this job

The cooling column should say compressor on every freezer here. A thermoelectric cooler rated as "degrees below ambient" can't promise 0°F, because its result depends on the air around it. One maker's thermoelectric line is rated at up to 27°C below ambient on a current model. That's a lot of cooling on paper and still not a freezer on a mild afternoon.

Zones: one freezer, or a freezer with a fridge attached

Single zone means one compartment at one temperature. Many single-zone units can run as either a fridge or a freezer; one maker's blog says users can switch between fridge and freezer settings, and another maker's product page says its unit can freeze food for long trips or chill drinks.

A dual-zone freezer is two boxes under one lid: frozen on one side, chilled on the other. One maker's dual-zone manual has a fast-cooling mode that sends all the cooling to one compartment for the first 15 minutes while the other holds its temperature, and notes that taking the divider out turns it into a single zone with one setting. Dual-zone boxes have their own page, the portable fridge freezer.

Capacity: think in wrapped packages, not cans

Capacity is in quarts. For a freezer, picture flat wrapped packages, not drinks. Penn State Extension says to space packages in a freezer so air can circulate for cooling and freezing. That means a packed-solid freezer freezes new packages slower than one with gaps.

A bigger box isn't free, either. One maker says a larger volume uses more electricity. On a battery, that's the whole budget.

Overhead sketch of a chest freezer packed with flat wrapped packages in rows, with gaps left between them for air

DC, AC and battery protection

All of these plug into the truck's 12V socket, and plenty take a household cord as well. Use the AC at home to pull the box down to 0°F before the trip, so the truck battery only has to hold it there.

Battery protection switches the freezer off when the battery voltage gets low. A freezer that runs overnight on the vehicle's starter battery is the same problem as any fridge: a charging-gear maker notes the fridge keeps drawing from the car battery once you stop. The wiring, cutoff levels and second-battery setups are laid out on the car fridge page, so I won't repeat them here.

Exterior size and weight: it comes home heavier

The size column gives the box's outside dimensions, and the weight column is the box with nothing in it. A freezer full of venison is the heaviest version of this cooler you'll ever lift, so measure where it rides and check that two people can get it out of the truck. My back would like that in writing.

Bringing venison home in a portable freezer

This is the reason most hunters look at a portable freezer, so here's the order that the extension services lay out.

  1. Cool the carcass first. Penn State Extension says to cool the carcass quickly to 35 to 40°F. Ohio State says that in seasons over 40°F, meat needs to be chilled within three to four hours.
  2. Don't freeze the whole carcass. Ohio State says freezing the carcass may cause the meat to toughen.
  3. Keep it cool in transport. Penn State says to keep the carcass cool during transport and not to put a deer in the trunk while it's still warm.
  4. Freeze the cuts, wrapped. Ohio State says to wrap meat tightly in freezer-grade material with as much air removed as possible, then freeze and store at 0°F or lower.
  5. Let warm food cool before it goes in. One maker's manual says not to put hot or warm food straight into its fridges.

My one opinion on this page: a portable freezer is for keeping frozen meat frozen on the way home, not for freezing a fresh deer in the truck. The reason is in steps 1 to 5. The extension services say chill the carcass, don't freeze it whole, and freeze wrapped cuts with air around them, and the maker says no warm food. A portable freezer does that last step well, a few packages at a time. A whole season's processing belongs at the processor or in the chest freezer in the garage.

Transport and tagging rules for game meat differ by state. Check your state wildlife agency before you haul meat across a state line.

Keeping a portable freezer cold on the drive

The drive home is where a portable freezer earns its spot over a large cooler full of ice.

Renee says I drive home from camp like I'm hauling a transplant organ. Real talk: it's a season of backstrap and burger. It deserves the respect.

The freezer as the camp's ice plant

Here's the part that makes an ice-logistics guy happy. A portable freezer at camp doesn't only carry meat. It can refreeze the ice packs and water jugs for the hard cooler, so the drinks cooler gets fresh cold every night instead of a trip to town. One maker even sells a compressor model with a built-in ice maker, which tells you somebody in an engineering department had the same idea.

The ice math changes, too. With a freezer running on the truck or a cabin outlet, the hard cooler stops being the only cold box and becomes the overflow. Frozen jugs go in the cooler in the morning, come back to the freezer at night. I call it the shuttle. Nobody else at camp has volunteered to drive it.

Two cautions. Keep the freezer's own packages wrapped and sealed so a sweating jug never drips on them, and don't let the rotation turn into a lid that's open every ten minutes. The jugs can wait until the evening.

Thawing it at the other end

The freezer did its job; don't undo it on the counter. Penn State Extension says to thaw frozen meat in the refrigerator, under cold running water, or in the microwave and cook it immediately.

One thawing warning from Ohio State is plain and worth following: take venison out of vacuum-sealed packaging before you thaw it in the refrigerator or microwave, because sealed packaging raises the risk of C. botulinum growth during thawing.

Who should skip a portable freezer

If your camp is a day's drive from home and you take the deer straight to a processor, a big hard cooler with ice covers the gap. If you never carry frozen food and only want cold drinks, a portable fridge with a narrower range does the job. And if you have no plan for power on the road, a portable freezer becomes an insulated box that is slowly warming, which is just a cooler that cost more.

If you do haul meat, buy for the number on the spec sheet: 0°F or colder. Then pack it with gaps and keep the lid shut.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between a 12V freezer and a portable fridge freezer?

A 12V freezer here is any powered cooler rated to 0°F or below, single compartment or not. A portable fridge freezer usually means dual zone: two compartments set to different temperatures, so one side freezes while the other chills. Many single-zone units also work as either one; one maker notes its fridges switch between fridge and freezer settings.

Can a portable freezer keep ice cream frozen?

A compressor model rated to 0°F or below can. One maker says that if you want ice cream frozen in extreme heat you should look at a compressor cooler, since compressor units freeze whatever the weather is doing. A thermoelectric cooler can't promise that, because its cooling is tied to the air around it.

Can I use a car freezer while driving?

Yes. A portable freezer runs on 12V DC from the vehicle socket while you drive, and many also run on household AC. Once the engine stops, it keeps drawing from the vehicle battery, so use its battery protection or a second battery for overnight stops. The car fridge page covers the power setups.

How long can venison stay in the freezer?

Ohio State Extension says most cuts keep six to nine months at 0°F or below, and Penn State Extension says properly wrapped game meat stores 9 to 12 months. Those are quality guides. Wrap tightly in freezer-grade material, label the date, and keep the freezer at 0°F or colder.

Can a car fridge be used as a freezer?

Only if the maker rates it to 0°F or colder. Many compressor car fridges do and can be set as a freezer by dialing the thermostat down. Thermoelectric coolers can't. Check the lowest-temperature column on this page rather than the word freezer in a product name.

Is a portable freezer worth it for deer season?

Measure it by the distance between the deer and your home freezer. A long haul or several days at camp with power available is the case one maker's buying guide reserves for compressor units; without power, it sends you back to a passive cooler. If the processor is an hour from camp, a hard cooler with ice covers that drive.
