Portable Refrigerator

A portable refrigerator is a compressor fridge in a carry-around box: it cools to the temperature you set whether the afternoon is hot or the night is freezing. That's what separates it from a cooler. The choices that matter are the temperature range, the size you'll actually fill, how you'll power it at camp, and where it sits once you get there. (Walt says the cabin already has a refrigerator, and it's called November. He's half right, and I'll get to the other half.)

What’s in this listPortable fridges with a compressor, which cool to a set temperature regardless of the weather, as stated by the maker or the Amazon listing. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.

What makes a portable refrigerator a fridge and not a cooler

The table on this page lists portable fridges with a compressor, which cool to a set temperature regardless of the weather, as the maker or the Amazon listing states it. That rule is the whole difference. A cooler, even an electric cooler of the thermoelectric kind, only slows warming or holds a gap below the outside air. A portable refrigerator chases a number you dial in.

The overview of every powered cooler, and how the cooling types differ, is on the electric cooler page. The vehicle side, with batteries and mounting, is on the car fridge page. This page is about the fridge as a piece of camp furniture: what it does at the campsite or the cabin, how big it should be, and how to keep it happy for a whole season. People call it a camping fridge, a camping refrigerator or a portable fridge. It's all the same box.

Why "regardless of the weather" is the spec that matters

Camp weather swings. A September bow camp can hit the 80s by noon and a November rifle week can sit in the teens. A portable refrigerator is built for both ends.

On the hot end, one maker says its compressor coolers hold cold or freezing temperatures even on the hottest days. Another maker's manual says its fridges are engineered to run in ambient temperatures up to 131°F. You won't see that at Hemlock Run, but the inside of a truck cab in August gets closer than you'd think.

On the cold end, here's the other half of Walt's joke. November air is free, but it isn't a thermostat. A cooler left on the porch at 15°F freezes the eggs and the lettuce right along with the venison. A compressor fridge can't heat, but its thermostat simply stops running the compressor when the box is cold enough. One maker's FAQ adds a cold-weather setting: a low-temperature compensation switch that should be turned on in cold weather so its freezer side reaches normal temperature. Check whether your manual has one.

The same FAQ says temperature swings of 7 to 14°F in its freezers are normal as the compressor cycles. So don't panic at the first wobble on the display.

What to look at when you pick a portable refrigerator

The table shows the specs the makers or the listings state: lowest temperature, capacity, zones, AC and DC power, battery protection, a built-in battery, exterior size and weight. At camp, this is the order I'd read them in.

Lowest temp and set range: fridge, freezer or both

The FDA's food-storage page draws the two lines that matter: 40°F or colder for fresh food, 0°F for frozen. A portable refrigerator rated down to 0°F or lower can double as a freezer; more on that is on the portable freezer page. One maker's US listings show set ranges such as -7°F to +68°F and -7°F to +50°F. A wide range just means more ways to use one box: drinks in summer, frozen meat in November.

Capacity: buy the quarts you'll fill

Capacity is in quarts. Since there's no ice inside, every quart is food space; the electric cooler page has one maker's numbers on how much smaller that lets you go.

Two things push back against buying big. One maker notes a larger fridge uses more electricity. And an empty box holds cold poorly: another maker's manual says its small fridge, tested empty in a 77°F room, warmed from 0°F to 68°F in about 3 hours. A fridge that's mostly air is a fridge working hard to keep air cold, and air doesn't make sandwiches. Buy for the food you'll carry on a normal trip, not for the one week a year you dream about.

Zones: one fridge, or a fridge and a freezer

Single zone is one box, one temperature. Dual zone puts a wall in the middle so each half gets its own setting. One maker's dual-zone units run each compartment anywhere between 50°F and -8°F, and pulling the wall out gives you back one big compartment with one setting. If you want ice cream and lettuce in the same box, look at the portable fridge freezer page.

AC and DC power: the cabin outlet is your friend

DC input means it runs from a vehicle's 12V socket. AC power means it runs from a wall outlet, built in or with an adapter. At a cabin with power or a campground with hookups, AC keeps the fridge off your battery entirely. At least one maker builds in automatic switching that picks AC whenever the wall cord is plugged in; another maker's FAQ says not to connect both at once on its units. That's exactly why you read the manual for your model, not the forum.

If the fridge will spend nights on a battery at camp, read the battery-protection column and the car fridge page's power section before you buy.

Battery protection and built-in batteries: power away from the truck

Two columns decide whether the fridge can live at a campsite with no vehicle nearby. With a battery built in or clipped on, the fridge carries its own power for a while, and those models have their own page on battery powered coolers. Battery protection stops the compressor when the supply voltage sags, so the fridge doesn't flatten whatever battery it's on. Feeding it from a power station at the campsite? One maker points owners to the lowest cutoff level for that setup, because no engine is waiting on that battery in the morning. Dial it back up before the fridge rides home on the truck's socket.

Exterior size and weight: the walk from the truck

The table gives exterior size in inches and empty weight in pounds. At camp, the question is who carries it from the truck to the shade, and over what. A full compressor fridge is not a one-hand carry. Pick the weight you can move with the food in it, and measure the spot it'll sit in, lid open.

Where to put a portable fridge at camp

Placement does more for a camping fridge than any button on the panel. Here's what the makers say:

I park ours on two scrap boards under the big hemlock, vents facing the open side. Renee says it's the only thing at camp I've ever given a porch.

Packing a camping refrigerator so it stays cold

A fridge runs best when you pack it like one.

  1. Pre-chill at home. Run it on house power overnight and load it with food that's already cold.
  2. Coldest stuff low. One maker's manual says cold air sinks, so the bottom is coldest, and the display shows only the center temperature. Raw meat goes on the bottom, sealed.
  3. Leave room for air. The FDA says not to crowd a refrigerator so tightly that air can't circulate.
  4. No hot food, no open liquids. The same manual says to let hot food cool first and not to put open containers of liquid inside.
  5. Open it on purpose. The same manual asks for a closed, secured lid between visits. Decide what you want before the lid comes up.

My one opinion on this page: put a thermometer in your portable refrigerator, and believe it over the display. The reason is in that maker's own manual: the display reads the center of the box, while the bottom runs colder and the top runs warmer. The FDA's food-storage advice is to keep an appliance thermometer in the fridge and read it at least weekly, because the display can't tell you what the food feels. At camp, I check it every morning with the coffee.

Caring for a portable refrigerator

A portable fridge is a long-term piece of gear. One maker's blog puts the typical lifespan of portable fridge freezers at about 20 years with good care, and lists two chores that get you there: clean coils, and lid seals that are clean and closing properly. A tired seal leaks cold all day.

Portable refrigerator safety

Keep spray cans with flammable propellant out of the fridge, and don't touch the compressor or condenser while it runs, since they can be very hot; both warnings are in one maker's manual. When a fridge is finally done, take the lid or door off before it goes to the curb, so a child can't get trapped inside. The same manual says that too.

Who should skip a portable refrigerator

If your camp has a working fridge and you only need to get groceries there, a hard cooler for the drive is all you need. If you have no outlet, no daily driving and no battery plan, a portable refrigerator turns into a heavy box with thin walls by day two. And if your trips are day trips, a cooler bag does the job for a fraction of the weight.

For everyone else, the fridge earns its spot under the hemlock. Set it, check it, and leave the lid shut.

Questions people ask

Is a portable fridge for camping better than a cooler?

It's different. A portable fridge holds a set temperature with no ice, as long as it has power. A cooler needs no power but warms up day by day as the ice melts. For long trips with a battery, outlet or daily driving, the fridge is steadier. For short trips with no power plan, the cooler is simpler.

What temperature should a camping refrigerator be set to?

For fresh food, keep it at or below 40°F, the FDA's refrigerator line, and check it with an appliance thermometer. Set the fridge a few degrees below that, since one maker notes the display shows the center of the box, and cold air sinks so the bottom runs colder than the top.

Does a portable refrigerator work in cold weather?

Yes, but read the manual. One maker's FAQ says that in cold weather the low-temperature compensation switch should be turned on so the freezer side can reach its normal temperature. In freezing weather, also watch the fridge side, since the outside air can make it colder than you set.

How long does a portable fridge stay cold when it's unplugged?

Not as long as a good ice chest, so plan for power. One maker's manual says its small dual-zone fridge, tested empty in a 77°F room, warmed from 0°F to 68°F in about 3 hours on average. Food that's already cold holds longer than an empty box, and the lid should stay shut.

Do I have to wait before turning on a portable fridge after moving it?

Only if it was on its side or upside down. One maker's manual says a fridge delivered upside down should stand upright for 24 hours so the compressor oil can settle before you power it on. A fridge that rode upright in the truck is fine to plug in.
