4 Person Tent
A 4 person tent is the most flexible size there is: roomy for two adults and their gear, tight but workable for four on pads, and still small enough to pitch alone. The rating counts sleeping pads side by side, so the deciding question is who's sleeping in it and what comes in with them. Check the floor, the doors and the weight before the number on the bag. (Jess says a 4 person tent is a 2 person tent with a mudroom. She's right, and she knows it.)

What’s in this listTents rated for four people by their maker or listing, largest floor first. “—” means neither the maker nor the Amazon listing states it.
What a 4 person tent is for
A 4 person tent sits in the middle of the tent world. It's the biggest size most people can still pitch alone, and the smallest that two adults can share without trading elbows all night.
The four on the bag counts pads, not people. Per CORE Equipment, makers usually rate a tent by laying standard-width sleeping pads across the floor and counting how many fit. Four means four pads, wall to wall, with nothing else inside. CORE's rule of thumb is campers times two equals the ideal capacity, and by that rule this is the two-person comfort size.
That gives a 4 person tent three common jobs:
- Two adults car camping, with bags, boots and a dog bed inside
- A parent and two small kids, where the small sleepers stretch the floor
- Two or three hunters on pads, gear in the vestibules
Fabric, pole and care basics that apply to every tent live on the camping tent page. Here's what changes at this size.
How to read the 4 person tent table
Every tent in the table carries a four-person rating from its maker or listing, and the biggest floor comes first. Columns cover the rated sleepers, the floor's length, width and area, center height, style, setup, seasons, doors, rainfly and weight. The maker's numbers come first and the Amazon listing fills in where the maker is silent (marked as listing values). A dash means neither states it, because we only print what one of them printed. Weight is always the maker's own figure.
Sorting by floor puts the roomiest 4 person tents at the top and the tightest at the bottom. If you're two people with gear, start at the top. If you're carrying the tent any distance, look at the Weight column next to each floor size, because the two climb together.
What to look at in a 4 person tent
Floor size for two adults or four sleepers
Floor length and floor width tell you more than the rating. Multiply them for the floor area; the table shows it when the maker or the listing gives the dimensions.
For two adults, look at the width. Two wide pads or a double mattress, plus a strip on each side for a bag, is the setup most couples want. For four sleepers, look at the length. Tall people on a short floor end up with their feet against the wall all night, and CORE's guide says taller campers should pay attention to tent length for exactly that reason.
My one opinion on this page: for two adults car camping, buy the 4 person tent, not the 2 person one. The reason is CORE's own rule of thumb, two campers times two. The extra floor is where the gear goes, so it doesn't go on top of you.
Two doors and two vestibules
The Doors column shows how many the maker lists. In a tent this size, two doors on opposite sides means each sleeper gets out without crawling over the other. Anyone who has shared a tent with a man who gets up at 4:30 understands the value. (That man is me.)
A vestibule is the covered space between the tent door and the rainfly, outside the sleeping area. MSR's tent guide lists vestibule area as one of the key measurements, along with floor area, volume and interior peak height, and says to weigh the number of doors with how much gear the vestibules cover. Boots and wet packs go there. Food and anything that smells like food goes in the truck.
Freestanding or staked
Check the Setup column for what holds the tent upright. MSR's guide spells out the options:
- Freestanding: the poles alone hold the tent up
- Semi-freestanding: poles plus some stakes or guy lines to get the shape
- Non-freestanding: needs stakes and guy lines, sometimes trekking poles
A freestanding tent can be picked up and moved before you stake it, which is handy on a campsite with roots and rocks. But MSR still recommends staking a freestanding tent and using its guy lines. A tent with no stakes in it is a kite waiting for the wind to make a decision.
Peak height: sit up or stand up
The Center height column is the tallest point inside. Most 4 person tents let you sit up; some cabin-style ones let you stand. MSR's guide says steep, more vertical sidewalls give more usable interior space, because the height holds out toward the walls instead of only at the peak.
Ask yourself how much time you'll spend inside awake. A deer camp crew that sleeps in the tent and lives at the fire can go lower. A family that plays cards through a rainy afternoon wants a taller tent and steeper walls.
Weight: minimum or packaged
Read the Weight column carefully, because makers list two kinds of weight. MSR's guide defines minimum weight as the bare essentials (rainfly, body and poles) and packaged weight as everything in the package. A footprint, if you buy one, adds its own weight on top.
If the tent rides in the truck, weight matters only for the walk to the campsite. If you hike in, it matters for every mile. Backpacking tents give up interior space to save weight, per MSR, so a backpacking 4 person tent and a car camping 4 person tent are different animals with the same number on the bag.
Fabric thickness and the floor
Fabric is listed by denier, which MSR describes as a measure of fiber thickness. MSR says higher-denier fabric is heavier and bulkier, but also more durable. That trade shows up most in the floor, which takes the wear from knees, boots and dogs.
The Waterproof rating column gives a hydrostatic head figure in millimeters when the maker lists one. It's the height of a water column the fabric holds back before moisture seeps through. CORE Equipment says its floors use a polyethylene liner with a polyethylene surface coating, a different build from its walls. If the maker gives a separate floor rating, read that one too.
Seasons and setup style
Most 4 person tents are 3-season tents. The Seasons column says 4-season only when the maker states it. If your camp sees snow, start with the winter camping tent page instead.
Setup style is the other quick filter. Instant tents with pre-attached poles are on the instant tent page. Pole-and-clip domes are the classic 4 person design and are covered on the dome tent page.
4 person tent setups and when each fits
The car camping dome
The most common 4 person tent: two crossing poles, a mesh body and a rainfly. Easy to pitch alone, easy to dry, sized for a campground pad. A good first tent for a couple or a small family. More on the car camping tent page.
The small cabin
Steeper walls and more headroom on a similar floor, per the sidewall point in MSR's guide. You can kneel to dress instead of lying down. Compare its Weight column with the domes before you decide. Worth it if the tent is where you spend rainy hours.
The backpacking 4 person tent
Built to save weight, which MSR says costs interior space. It's for a group that splits the tent between packs. For anyone else, it saves ounces the truck doesn't care about.
A 4 person tent at deer camp
Not every deer camp has a cabin. For an early bow season trip, a 4 person tent with two or three hunters is a common setup, and it has its own habits.
Hunters come back wet. Wet jackets, wet boots and damp socks put a lot of water into a small tent, and so does breathing all night. Most 3-season tents, per MSR, are double-wall: an inner body of mesh with a waterproof fly over it. That inner mesh gives the moisture a way out toward the fly, so keep the fly's vents open and the wet clothes in the vestibule, not on the sleeping bags.
Hunters also leave early. Two doors pay off before first light, when one person is dressing by headlamp and the other has another hour to sleep. A light that hangs from the ceiling loop helps; see the tent light page.
And hunters bring gear. Bows in cases, packs, a cooler of lunches. Plan to keep the bulky items in the truck or under the vestibules, and let the tent floor be for sleeping. If the crew grows past three, the next size up is cheaper than the argument.
Pitching it right
Pick the flattest spot and clear the sticks and stones first; the floor is the part you'll feel all night. Push every pole joint home with your hands; Big Agnes's instructions warn against letting the shock cord slam the sections together. Tighten the fly's buckle webbing as needed to keep it taut, then stake out the guy lines.
Big Agnes notes that its guy lines and webbing are reflective, which helps prevent trips in headlamp light. Whatever tent you buy, walk around it once at dusk and learn where the lines are. Your shins will thank you at midnight.
Who should skip the 4 person tent
Skip it if you're four adults with cots or air mattresses. CORE's guide says a queen air mattress takes the floor space of two campers, and four adults with gear want a bigger size. Start at the 6 person tent page.
Skip it if you're one person backpacking. A smaller tent carries better, and the floor you don't use still weighs something.
Skip it if you need a stove in camp. That takes a tent with a factory stove jack; see the hot tent page.
Care that keeps it dry
Big Agnes says its tents are seam sealed during manufacturing, and taped seams don't need liquid sealer unless you want extra protection. If you add sealer, let it dry completely before you pack the tent. Misapplied sealer can void the warranty, so read the maker's instructions first.
After the trip, shake the dirt out, dry the tent all the way and keep it out of long hours of direct sun, which Big Agnes says can compromise waterproofing. The tent cleaning guide has the rest. A 4 person tent that goes home dry is the one that's still in the garage when my grandson wants to camp.

Questions people ask
How many people can sleep in a 4 person tent?
Four on sleeping pads with almost no gear inside. CORE Equipment explains that makers rate tents by counting standard-width pads laid across the floor. For comfort, CORE's rule of thumb is campers times two, which makes a 4 person tent the comfortable size for two people with their gear.
Is a 4 person tent good for 2 adults?
It's the size most couples end up wanting for car camping. Two adults use the space beside their pads for bags and boots, and two doors let each one get out without climbing over the other. For backpacking, the extra floor costs weight, so many hikers carry a smaller tent instead.
Is a 4 person tent big enough for a family of four?
Only if the kids are small and everyone sleeps on pads. The rating assumes four standard pads wall to wall with no gear inside. CORE Equipment says a queen air mattress uses the floor space of two campers, so one mattress for the adults leaves room for two pads at most. Most families of four move up a size.
What is a freestanding 4 person tent?
MSR's tent guide defines a freestanding tent as one where the poles alone support the structure. You can pick it up and move it before staking. A semi-freestanding tent needs some stakes or guy lines to pitch. MSR still recommends staking a freestanding tent and using its guy lines.
Do I need a footprint for a 4 person tent?
It's optional, but it helps the floor last. Big Agnes recommends a footprint to extend floor life. MSR's guide notes that most tents don't include one, so its weight gets added to the packaged weight if you carry it. On rocky or gravel campsites, it's cheap protection for the most expensive part of the floor.
