Sport-Brella Umbrellas, Chairs and Shelters

Sport-Brella makes portable shade and the seats that go under it. The core of the lineup is the umbrella shelter: a big umbrella that stands upright or tips over on its side and drops side flaps, so it works as a small lean-to. Around that sit regular tilt umbrellas, an open-walled stretch shelter, a clamp-on personal umbrella, backpack beach chairs and a small folding table. Here's the thing: decide how you'll anchor it before you decide how big it is. Sand, grass and a ball-field sideline don't hold a pole the same way.

What Sport-Brella makes

On this site, Sport-Brella covers four product types, and you'll see them in the grid above:

The umbrellas are the bulk of it. The chairs and the table are there to go under them.

Most specs in the grid come from Amazon listings, and the grid marks those. Where I quote the maker, I say so. Where a listing doesn't say, the grid shows a dash.

The grid also changes as listings and colors come and go, so I'll write about the lines and what separates them, not about how many of each are up this week.

Lineup notes: Sport-Brella umbrella shelters

What makes it a shelter, not just an umbrella

This is the idea the brand is built on. The maker's pages for the Super-Brella and the Premiere say the same thing: you can set the umbrella upright, or lean it over into a "leaning configuration" with side panels down. Upright, it's shade overhead. Leaning, it's a wall on the windward side with a roof over it.

The maker lists these features on its shelter pages:

A shop-class way to think about it: upright, it's a roof. Leaning, it's a roof that brought one wall.

Super-Brella

The Super-Brella is the shelter listed as 8 ft in the grid. The maker's page puts it at about 88 inches across upright and about 90 inches wide in the leaning setup. Folded, the maker says it's about 53 inches long and about 8 pounds. It anchors with what the maker calls a low-profile tip, and the pole telescopes so you can change height and shade angle.

One Super-Brella listing in the grid mentions top wind vents and zippered windows. Read the listing for the exact version you're looking at.

Premiere and Premiere XL

The Premiere is the shelter with the auger. The maker's page lists a built-in tilt on the center pole and an auger bit with a twist handle "for effortless and secure anchoring in sand, dirt, and grass." Its size and weight on the maker's page match the Super-Brella: about 88 inches upright, about 90 at its widest leaning, about 53 inches and 8 pounds folded.

In the grid, the Premiere is listed at 8 ft with a steel pole, and the Premiere XL at 9 ft. Both list a screw auger anchor. A bigger canopy catches more wind, plain and simple, so the bigger one asks more of the anchor.

Ultra Angled Shade

The Ultra is the third shelter, listed at 8 ft in the grid. The maker's Ultra page describes the same upright-or-leaning idea, UPF 50+ fabric, a 1.25-inch pole, an auger bit and a zippered back window. It lists the folded Ultra at about 59 inches long and about 5.75 pounds. That's a longer bag and a lighter carry than the Super-Brella.

Lineup notes: plain umbrellas and the Sol-Breeze

Tilt umbrellas

Not every Sport-Brella is a shelter. The grid also lists a 7 ft beach umbrella with a tilt and an aluminum pole, per its listing. No side flaps, no leaning mode. It's an umbrella. Sometimes that's all the job needs.

Fieldedge bi-fold umbrella

The Fieldedge is the small one in the grid: 6 ft across with a screw auger, per its listing. Its name says "bi-fold," meaning it folds in two for a shorter carry. A 6 ft umbrella shades one or two chairs. On a ball-field sideline that's about right. (My grandson's fall soccer games taught me that the sun is always behind the goal you're watching.)

Sol-Breeze shelter

The Sol-Breeze is a different animal. It isn't an umbrella at all. The maker describes a stretch canopy on two vertical poles, open on all sides, held down by sand bags on adjustable tethers. The sand bag fabric stretches, the maker says, so you can fill it with as much sand as the day needs. The canopy stretches too, and you set the shade angle by moving the poles and tethers.

The grid lists the 10x10 size; the maker also offers a 7x7. A 2024 press release for the launch gives it UPF 50+ protection. On the maker's page, the 7x7 is sized for up to four people and the 10x10 for five or more.

The trade is clear: no center pole to drive, no spokes, and full view in every direction. But it wants sand to fill the bags, so it's a beach tool first. The beach shade page and the beach canopy page cover open-sided shade across brands.

Lineup notes: Sport-Brella chairs and the table

SunSoul backpack chairs

The SunSoul chairs are backpack chairs, meaning they fold flat and carry on your shoulders. The listings show 225 lb capacity and three recline positions, and one SunSoul listing names an aluminum frame. The maker's SunSoul page adds:

Seven inches off the sand is a low seat. My knees have a standing policy about low seats: they'll go down, but they want to discuss the trip back up. Check the seat height against your own knees before you buy. The backpack beach chair page compares seat heights across brands.

Chairs with an umbrella built in

Two Sport-Brella chairs in the grid come with their own shade. The reclining beach chair with umbrella lists three recline positions, a cup holder and a canopy. The beach chair with adjustable umbrella lists a steel frame, a 242 lb capacity, a cup holder and a canopy.

The maker's page for its recliner chair describes a swiveling personal umbrella with a silver underside and UPF 50+, three recline positions, a removable footrest and a 250 lb capacity. Check that the listing you're looking at is that same model before you count on those features. The beach chair with umbrella page and the reclining beach chair page cover these across brands.

Versa-Brella bundles

The Versa-Brella turns up in the grid bundled with a backpack chair, in a regular and an XL version. The Versa-Brella is the clamp-on umbrella. The maker's page says:

The clamp idea fits more than beach chairs. The maker lists chairs, wagons, strollers, coolers, tables and golf carts. Measure the tube on your own chair before you count on the fit; 1.75 inches is as wide as it opens.

SunSoul portable table

The SunSoul table is the small one. The grid lists a fabric top. The maker's page says the top is about 23.5 by 17 inches and sits about 18.5 inches high, the frame is aluminum, the table weighs about 2.38 pounds, it folds to about 2.5 by 27 inches in its bag, and it has two cup holders.

Eighteen and a half inches high puts it at the arm of a low chair, not at a dinner table. It's for drinks and a book. The camping table page covers taller tables if you're feeding a crew.

How to choose within the Sport-Brella lineup

Start with the ground

Rule of thumb: the ground picks the anchor, the anchor picks the umbrella.

The beach umbrella with anchor page covers anchors across brands.

Then upright or shelter

If you only ever want shade overhead, a tilt umbrella does that. If you sit out in wind, or want a back wall to block blowing sand, the shelters do both jobs. The trade is weight: the maker puts the Super-Brella and Premiere at about 8 pounds folded.

Then size

A bigger canopy shades more chairs and catches more wind. Count the chairs you'll actually set up, then pick the canopy that covers them, not the biggest one in the grid. The beach umbrella page explains canopy sizes across brands.

Then the carry

Count the trips from the truck. A backpack chair frees your hands for an umbrella bag and a table. A chair with a built-in umbrella is one less bag. The folded lengths the maker lists for the shelters, 53 to 59 inches, matter more in a hatchback than on paper.

Setup and safety

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that airborne beach umbrellas have caused serious injuries and deaths. Its 2024 safety alert says:

Watch for gusts, and take the umbrella down when the wind picks up. A leaning shelter with its windows zipped shut is a sail. The maker added those windows to let air through.

Sport-Brella facts

What I could verify:

Shake the sand out of the bag before it goes back in the truck. The truck will thank you in November, when you go looking for the tire chains.

Questions about Sport-Brella

Is Sport-Brella good?

What the maker states is checkable. Its umbrella shelters list UPF 50+ fabric, a 1.25-inch center pole, zippered windows and an upright or leaning setup, and the Premiere adds an auger bit with a twist handle. Its SunSoul backpack chair is rated to 225 lb with three recline positions. Pick by where you'll set up and how you'll anchor, then compare the specs.

What is a Sport-Brella umbrella shelter?

It's an umbrella that works two ways. Upright, it's a regular shade umbrella. Tipped on its side with the side panels down, it becomes a leaning shelter that blocks sun and wind from one direction. The maker gives the Super-Brella and Premiere about 88 inches across upright and about 90 inches at their widest in the leaning setup.

How do you anchor a Sport-Brella?

It depends on the model. The Premiere uses an auger bit with a twist handle that the maker says works in sand, dirt and grass. The Super-Brella has a low-profile tip and a telescoping pole. The Sol-Breeze shelter uses stretchy sand bags on adjustable tethers. Follow the setup instructions that come with your model, every time.

What is the Versa-Brella?

A small personal umbrella that clamps onto a chair, cart, cooler or stroller. The maker says its clamp opens to 1.75 inches and fits round or square tubes, its canopy spans 38 by 39 inches, about 10 square feet of shade, and three push-button joints let you aim it. In the grid it comes bundled with a backpack chair.

Where can I buy Sport-Brella?

The product grid on this page links to Sport-Brella listings on Amazon US, filtered by type: umbrellas, beach chairs, the shelter and the table. Colors and bundles change as listings come and go, so check the exact model name on the listing against the one you want.
